Ridge Dance Team Wins Again: First Competition of the Year

2/26/2022

On February 26th, 2022, the Ridge Dance Team competed in their first competition of the 2021-2022 school year! The team went to Starbound, which is one of the best and largest dance competitions in America. Millions of young and talented dancers go to Starbound competitions in cities across the country. Dancers can compete in many disciplines of dance including jazz, hip-hop, contemporary, tap, ballet, and much more. At the Starbound competition the Ridge Dance Team attended, they competed with two hip-hop routines and a jazz routine, winning a High Gold for all their routines, as well as special judges awards.

The first dance the Ridge Dance Team competed with was a hip-hop routine titled, “Get Low”. This routine included all 20 dancers of the team. The intense and energizing routine was choreographed by Jude Cassion, who previously choreographed many other Ridge Dance Team hip-hop routines. The idea for this routine was based off of Ridge Dance’s showcase theme, “Dancing Through the Halls,” which incorporated all aspects of school life. For this particular dance, the dancers are supposed to emulate “Advanced Placement Gym” students throughout the high-intensity routine. Cassion cleverly embedded steps reminiscent of stretching position, like lunges, or cardio movements, like jump roping, throughout the routine to bring the idea of “AP Gym,” to life.

“It really is like a cardio workout,” said one of the Ridge Dance Team members, “I truly feel like I’m in an AP Gym class”.

In the end, the hours of rehearsal paid off. The Ridge Dance Team won a high gold with their electrifying hip-hop routine, bringing home the first award of the 2021-2022 school year!
