Distant Horrors

In the shadows, they exist

Breathing and feeling

Bleeding and hurting

Yet we shut the door and persist

Exploited for their recourses, vulnerability, and innocence

We hear their cries

Yet, close our eyes

To a life unfamiliar to us

Of cage, beatings, slaughter, and isolation

You care about them when it’s convenient

You disregard them when it’s not

For why should it matter what we can’t see?

It’s so distant from our reality

We justify and justfiy

They’re just simple beasts, we say

As long as they are not humans

What we do to them is okay

While we sit in our bliss

They wail and whimper

Tremble and shake

Stare and sit in a windowless room

Cold, alone, and with fear

Not knowing what day will be their last

When their agony will end

All left is to hope

That humans have a glimpse of empathy within

Will humanity ever awaken?

To see that genocide of animals is not okay

Or is it too normalized now

Hundreds of millions killed each day

For it is not just killed

Tortured as well
Robbed of every single right

When will we draw the line?

We continue to do what we know

Justify and justfiy

And support these cruel industries

For why should it matter what we can’t see?
It’s so distant from our reality
