The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

The Song of Achilles – Madeline Miller

In literature, there’s a phrase called “Never Stand Next to the Hero”, where the deuteragonist usually suffers to drive the plot for the protagonist. Just think of wise Uncle Ben and his web-slinging nephew Spider-man or the loyal Mercutio and his star-crossed friend Romeo. But what happens when the deuteragonist becomes the protagonist? In The Song of Achilles, author Madeline Miller explores this very idea, where the popular tale of the great Graecian hero Achilles and the Trojan War is told through his partner and love-interest Patroclus. Miller takes a deep dive into this unique perspective, battling certain topics such as love, betrayal, and the innocence of youth. Both lovers of mythology and those less accustomed to it will love this enriching story of two tragic young men.

Opening Line: “My father was a king and the son of kings.”

Favorite Line: “Their hands meet, and light spills in a flood like a hundred golden urns pouring out of the sun.”

Why I Like It: Being familiar with the story of the Trojan War, I enjoyed being able to gain insight to the deeper personalities of each character.
