Essay

I am a problem solver and a hands-on learner, but I am so much more.

I believe I am an ideal fit for Worcester Polytechnic Institute because of its project-based learning curriculum, which integrates projects like the Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP) and the Major Qualifying Project (MQP) into all majors. Since starting high school, I have eagerly embraced hands-on, engineering-based classes. In these classes, I have learned to use computer programs such as CAD, JAVA, Inventor, and Revit, along with tools including 3D printers and laser cutters. Having easy access to such a variety of tools has reinforced my passion for creating projects. I understand topics better when I am actively working on labs, solving problems, or building something. I have found that I learn more from applying myself and experimenting as opposed to listening to lectures or watching others. Additionally, WPI’s seven-week term complements my learning style, allowing me to focus intensely on three courses at a time to truly comprehend the material.

Beyond the classroom, I am captivated by the academic opportunities WPI offers. During my campus visit, the maker space and 3D printer lab fascinated me, and I could easily envision myself working there. I am eager to collaborate with the engineering faculty and engage in research. Dr. Christina Bailey-Hytholt’s research particularly resonates with me. This past summer, I worked on a research project focusing on hydrogels for biomedical applications, which sparked my interest in research and healthcare. Collaborating with Dr. Bailey-Hytholt would deepen my interest in materials systems for healthcare, especially in addressing unmet needs in women’s health. Furthermore, I am interested in joining the High Powered Rocketry Club. I have been fascinated by rockets for as long as I can remember. Some of my fondest memories involve building model rockets with my grandfather and launching them at the park. The opportunity to build a real rocket with the High Powered Rocketry Club and compete against other universities excites me.

I am eager to actively participate to the broader WPI community and will contribute my unique voice, along with a strong sense of teamwork, effective communication skills, and a dedicated work ethic. My background, a fusion of diverse experiences—as an athlete, musician, researcher, student, and teacher—will enable me to collaborate effectively with students from various backgrounds and cultures. With this mindset, I welcome the chance to participate in numerous campus activities and I am open to exploring even further. At my high school, I have participated in both the marching band and jazz band and have loved every second of it. I look forward to the opportunity to continue my musical journey with the WPI jazz group or marching band. I also began fencing as a sophomore, and it has become a significant aspect of my life. I am excited to continue my fencing career with the WPI Fencing Club. Both WPI’s academics and campus community align with my personal and educational goals and I am eager to start the journey on campus.

Tips for Writing

  • Start by writing what comes to your mind, and write as much as you can. Don’t worry about word count for the first few drafts; focus more on content.
  • Don’t just focus on the school. The prompt is asking about how you would fit in on their campus. So do talk about what the school offers but also mention yourself.
  • Do your research. If you are going to talk about a faculty member make sure their name is spelled correctly, or you are describing their research correctly. One of the worst  things you could do is talk about someone who doesn’t work there or a club they don’t have.
  • Answer both parts of the question. Talk about the academic community but also the social/ campus community.
  • Don’t save this for the last minute!!
