The Defining Decade by Meg Jay

The Defining Decade, by Meg Jay, is an incredibly thought provoking and evocative book that provides profound insights for an emerging adult; insights learned through the numerous clients of Dr. Jay. She delves into the 3 main aspects of life, including Work, Love, and The Brain and Body. She touches upon what identity capital is, and what it means to build identity capital. She discusses relationships, and in what manner they should contribute to your life. In the last portion of her book Dr. Jay combines the two realms of work and love and their intertwining nature, offering real experiences regarding work-life balance challenges that the reader can learn from. Finally, she ties everything together with clients reflecting on themselves, giving her clients and reader a chance to look inward, in order to change their outcomes outward.

Opening Line: “Helen came to therapy because, she said, she was ‘having an identity crisis’”.

Favorite Line: “There is no formula for a good life, and there is no right or wrong life. But there are consequences”

Why I like it: I like this book because it is a realistic and grounded perspective on the reality of the world.
